TMJ Charts: M83 Dethrones Santigold

A record-breaking streak of 17 weeks at #1 for Santigold's Disparate Youth has finally come to and end as we now turn our heads to M83 whose Midnight City reigns as the new #1 on the Songs chart. And it comes as big feat, not only because it's the electronic band's first chart-topper but it's a song that has been all over the chart since its debut. It first appeared in early November of last year where it bowed at #74 only to climb to #66 four weeks later before experiencing a brief absence starting early December. By February of this year the song re-enters at #97 and goes up to #42 by late March, before hovering around the lower parts of the chart once again. But it wasn't until early May that the song picks up a steady pace and finally breaks the Top 40. And steady ever since, it's now reached the top as Greatest Gainer in its 27th week on the chart. I can only remember one song that's taken longer to reach the summit and it's Kings Of Leon's Closer which back in 2009 conquered the top in its 37th week.

In other chart news, it's a good week for Flo Rida who sees Wild Ones featuring Sia pick up once again and is the week's Power Play at #18. There's also two debuts from his new album: I Cry is the week's Highest Debut at #29 followed by Run featuring RedFoo at #42. Howler's Black Lagoon is the week's other debut entering at #87. The week's Biggest Jump is Benny Benassi's Close To Me featuring Gary Go, a song that refuses to leave the chart and goes up 45 places to #55.

And a couple of names are also news. First off, Alanis Morissette gets her best chart peak so far as her newest single, Guardian, stands at #7 this week. Her best effort had been Incomplete which went as high as #9 in 2008. Another return to the top belongs to Linkin Park with Burn It Down standing at #10. This is their best chart position since Waiting For The End reached #6 in October of 2010.

TMJ Charts: Santigold Is Not Giving Up Yet

There's no stopping Santigold on the charts as she extends her record-breaking #1 run to 17 consecutive weeks with Disparate Youth. At this point I'm just trying to figure out what other song will be able to stay on top for so long, so what we're talking about here is basically hall-of-fame status. I should move along and try to compile a list of historic events that have left a mark in the charts. In the meantime, it's a good thing we still have new live performances to post from Santigold.

Disparate Youth (Live at Radio 1's Hackney Weekend)


Going back to this week's charts, there's a serious threat of a new #1, probably very soon. WZRD stays at #2 with a bullet with Love Hard, while, out of nowhere, electronic band M83 shoots for the stars as Midnight City raises from the ashes and scores Greatest Gainer honors with a move to #4, this is after lingering up and down the charts for 25 weeks. Friendly Fires is not giving up yet and stays at #3 once again with Chimes, and Lana Del Rey returns for a second round at the Top 10 with Blue Jeans moving to #9.

Strong re-entries for Jay-Z and Kanye West who score Power Play of the week with Niggas In Paris, and Birdy's Without A Word goes all the way to #33. The Biggest Jump of the week is another song that's not ready to lose steam yet: Gym Class Heroes and Neon Hitch scale back to the top half of the chart at #48 with Ass Back Home.

On the Recurrent Charts we see Kings Of Leon once again at the top with Notion for a total of 7 weeks at #1, while Santigold recovers her spot at the throne with Master Of My Make-Believe for a total of five non-consecutive weeks at #1.

TMJ Charts: Santigold Breaks #1 Record!

I saw it coming and it's happened. A 7-year-old record has finally been broken and we all have Santigold to turn our heads to. 16 weeks at the top gives Disparate Youth the honor of being the longest stay at the top for any song since I started this little chart back in late 2004. The record was previously held by Mariah Carey whose We Belong Together spent a total of 15 weeks at the top back in 2005. A few years later - six, to be exact - that record was almost broken when Friendly Fires tied at 15 weeks at the top with Hawaiian Air. That was in late 2011, but now the record goes back to one and one woman only. Cheers to that!

Now the thing is how long can she hold on to the top spot. Let's not forget that Disparate Youth had an incredible debut at #2, only to claim the #1 spot the week after. And the thing is that it's still ahead from its closest competitor by quite a decent amount of points. WZRD is getting ready though to claim their first chart-topper with either Love Hard (the week's Greatest Gainer) or Teleport 2 Me, Jamie which finds a new peak at #4. Alex Clare is also headlining the Top 10 with two tracks as Up All Night returns to #7 and Too Close goes single-digit for the first time at #9. And we say good-bye to Adele's Someone Like You as it leaves the Top 10 for the first time since December 23, 2011. The Biggest Jump and Power Play of the week goes to a well-deserved return to the charts to one favorite, Alanis Morissette, as Guardian jumps to #28. Her last chart appearance came in early 2009 when Not As We peaked at #63.

The Recurrent Chart sees Kings Of Leon returning to the #1 spot with Notion for a sixth week, while WZRD returns to the top of the albums chart with their self-titled record for a second week.

6th Week for Gotye & Kimbra

Not a lot of change in the Songs chart as we find Gotye and Kimbra spending their sixth consecutive week at the top with Somebody That I Used To Know, and though it's too early to tell, you should know that it's already become the biggest song of the year so far.

Elsewhere in the top ten, only two songs reach a new peak and those would be Bon Iver's Towers, which makes a surprising move to #2 and Friendly Fires' Pala which moves up a notch to #9. The longest running title here is also the week's Greatest Gainer with Adele's Someone Like You returning to #3 in its 30th week on the chart. An impressive chart run, that doesn't necessarily mean a shot at #1 is out of the question. If we go back to 2009 Kings Of Leon's Closer managed to become the longest run to the top in the history if the Songs chart by reaching the summit in its 37th week on the chart.

The week's biggest chart jump goes to Lana Del Rey whose Blue Jeans leaps 34 spots to #27 with three weeks on the chart. She also gets the Power Play track of the week and her fifth chart entry with Off To The Races making an entrance at #59. But the Highest Debut goes to The Fray, a band that returns to the chart after a two year absence. Heartbeat, from their newly released album Scars & Stories, enters at #38. Their last chart entry came in 2010 with Syndicate peaking at #67.

Outasight Gets First #1

A new edition of the charts reveals this week that Outasight takes over the Number One spot with his track Figure 8, an amazing feat after only three weeks. But Outasight is no stranger to the chart as he saw some action last year with songs like Dizzy and Catch Me If You Can, the latter reaching as high as the #4 position. Figure 8 became his third charted song and is his first ever #1.

After huge success so far with her latest album, Lykke Li returns to the honorable mentions as her song Rich Kids Blues becomes Greatest Gainer while jumping to the #8 spot. That's her 6th Top 10 song on the chart so far. The Power Play of the week is a re-entry by Bruno Mars as his song Count On Me sits at #81.

The Highest Debut belongs to Tinie Tempah with help from Ellie Goulding as Wonderman bows at the #62 position. The first chart appearance for him and the fourth for her. More debuts include Cee Lo Green's Love Gun featuring Lauren Bennett at #68; Beyoncé's latest Run The World (Girls) at #73 and Swedish House Mafia's belated One (Your Name) featuring Pharrell coming at #79.

The Biggest Jump is shared between a relatively new song and a much more experienced one. Former #1, Radioactive by Kings Of Leon, is more reactive now with a jump to #47 after 27 weeks on the chart, while Bibio's Take Off Your Shirt is reaching a new peak at #48 in its sixth week.

Coming off a triumphant headlining slot at this year’s Coachella, about which the LA Times said the Kings “touched down into something wistful and real, as nostalgic as rock 'n' roll itself,” the tour is the first multiple date U.S. run and the first coast to coast Canadian run since the release of the band’s fifth album, Come Around Sundown.

The 100th #1 Milestone

Me not posting anything about last week's chart was crazy, and even though tomorrow's Chart Post Day, I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to talk about this week's #1, because there's a lot going on with it: For a start, it ends Lykke Li's consecutive 6-week reign on the Songs Chart; it's the first chart-topper by an American band since Kings Of Leon's Radioactive from October of last year; it marks the band's return to the top, just a little over a year later, since Word Forward spent 3 weeks at #1; along with the aforementioned title and Best Of You, this one becomes their third #1 song so far; and last, but definitely not least, it becomes the 100th #1 in the history of this chart! What song am I talking about? Well, it's none other than Bridge Burning, the opening track from the Foo Fighters' latest studio release, Wasting Light.

One hundred number one songs is way more than I ever expected considering I started with a much more reduced Top 10 version of my favorite songs. That was about 6 and a half years ago. Who would've thought I'd be this consistent?! If you wanna go back in time, get some of that nostalgia and, why not, be shocked, here's a rundown of The TMJ Charts' history of Number One songs, in reverse chronological order:

Lykke Li Scores Second #1

Only a few artists like Interpol, Mariah Carey, The-Dream and Jay-Z have managed to get back to back #1 singles on my chart, but this week we can add another name to that list: Lykke Li. Up until this weekend she had dominated the songs chart with a remix to her song I Follow Rivers. Three weeks at the top went by and now she switches places with herself by getting her song Love Out Of Lust on top. This is now the singer's second #1 so far. But things are looking way better for this Swedish artist because, besides the two songs mentioned before, she's also charting the Greatest Gainer Silent My Song (#8) and the original I Follow Rivers (#10) in this week's Top 10. That's helping her album Wounded Rhymes get another week at the top of the albums chart.

A resurgence for Kings Of Leon's Birthday earns them the week's biggest leap by going from #77 to #44, quite impressive considering the song is on it's 24th chart appearance. The Power Play and Highest Debut belongs to Benny Benassi and Gary Go with their single Cinema. As expected, the song makes a quick debut at #68, just one spot higher than the Congorock Remix which debuted last week.

A couple more entries come from T.I. with Big Picture landing at #90 and Britney Spears' third song from Femme Fatale to debut, Criminal, opens at #96.

White Lies Takes The Top Spot

A new song reigns this week's chart and it's the band White Lies making a quick landing to the #1 spot with Bigger Than Us. It comes to no surprise because they did have a big debut at #17 just four weeks ago, though it's good to note that this is the first song by the band to chart, so it's quite the good accomplishment. This is also the first song by a band to go all the way since Kings Of Leon made it to the top with Radioactive in late October of last year.

But White Lies gets more than the #1 spot as several songs from their Ritual album also debut this week including Turn The Bells, Peace & Quiet, Strangers, Bad Love and Holy Ghost occupying the #95 through #99 spots.

Another artist to pay attention to is, of course, Lykke Li. If you've been following the blog you would know by now that I'm currently kind of obsessed with her. This week not only her I Follow Rivers (The Magician Remix) is a close call by jumping to the #2 spot, repeating as Greatest Gainer, but the release of her Wounded Rhymes album makes several of her songs Hot Shot Debuts including the Highest Debut, Love Out Of Lust (#30), Youth Knows No Pain (#90), Jerome (#92), Unrequited Love (#93) and the original I Follow Rivers (#94).

Also making a big debut is the Chris Brown and Benny Benassi collaboration, Beautiful People, which lands at #34 as Power Play of the week; We Are Tokyo also make their chart debut with The Best In Me (Ninetynine's Nightmare Remix) entering at #55; Neon Trees makes it times three with 1983 leading at #59, Our War at #69 and Love And Affection at #82; also new to the chart is The Radio Dept. who debut at #91 with Never Follow Suit and finally Katy Perry scores a second E.T. remix on the chart as the Tiësto take on her new single enters at #100. The E.T. (Benny Benassi Remix) is so far having the better luck jumping to #26 in it's second week.

The Biggest Jump belongs to the second single by rapper Lupe Fiasco featuring Skylar Grey, Words I Never Said going up 34 spots to land at #12 this week. Expect it to get a boost by next week which coincides with the long-awaited release of his third studio album, Lasers.

Year-End Top Songs 25 - 1

It all comes down to this! Last but definitely not least the 25 songs for this year's Top 100 Songs Countdown. There's quite a good variety of songs here, most of which are still on The Chart. Starting today, and for the next four days, I'll be presenting you The TMJ Charts Top 100 Songs for 2010! With the last chart issue of the year posted this past Saturday, I was finally ready to build these year-end charts. There'll be 25 songs posted each day until next Thursday when I'll be posting the Top 25.

There was a lot to choose from, with 511 different titles charting all throughout 2010, but these are the Top 100 based on the accumulated points for this year only (songs charting since 2009 are eligible). The stats are based on chart performance for 2010 as well, and titles with asterisks mean they're currently charting on the weekly Top 100.

'X Factor' Finalists Go To No. 1.. in the UK

There's already a pattern here. Plus, the reunited Take That hold off two other European boy - or man - bands, JLS and Westlife.

The X Factor finalists went straight to the top of the UK singles chart today (November 29) with their cover of David Bowie's 'Heroes'.

The single, sales of which are raising money for the Help For Heroes charity, went in at the top spot ahead of new entries from Ellie Goulding and Olly Murs.

In the albums stakes Take That held off competition from JLS and Westlife to stay on top of the UK albums chart with 'Progress'.

The album went straight to the top spot last Sunday, selling over 520,000 copies in its first week of release. Now the band can celebrate a second week at Number One despite tough competition from their two fellow boy bands.

The Top Ten UK albums are:

Lupe Fiasco Goes On To No. 1

It's only been two weeks since its debut but Lupe Fiasco gets his second chart-topper with The Show Goes On, after jumping from last week's No. 7 position. This marks the rapper's second No. 1 on The Chart. His first came on 2008 with the album track Intruder Alert featuring Sarah Green, which stayed on top for 4 consecutive weeks. This ends King Of Leon's three-week reign at the top with Radioactive which now settles for the No. 2 position. Meanwhile, Ke$ha gets a new peak of 3 for We R Who We R, N*E*R*D get their second top 10 hit from Nothing now that I've Seen The Light / Inside Of Clouds jumps to No. 8 and Brandon Flowers gets his first as a solo artist with Only The Young coming in at No. 9.

Rihanna & Susan Boyle Rule UK Charts

Rihanna keeps the momentum going in the singles chart with her hit Only Girl (In The World) while Susan Boyle dominates the albums chart with her holiday collection The Gift.

Rihanna has managed to keep Take That off the top of the UK singles chart tonight (November 14).

The singer stays at the summit for the second week with her new single 'Only Girl (In The World)' keeping 'The Flood', the Manchester band's first single for over 15 years with their original line-up, in second place.

Elsewhere, the Royal British Legion's poppy appeal single '2 Minute Silence', which features no audio whatsoever and a video with Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Mark Ronson, is in at Number 20.

My Chemical Romance's comeback single 'Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na)' is also a new entry at 31.

Meanwhile Susan Boyle has knocked Cheryl Cole off the top of the UK albums chart.

The 49-year-old Scottish singer, who shot to prominence in last year's Britain's Got Talent, has scored her second Number One LP with her Christmas covers record 'The Gift', which features Lou Reed's 'Perfect Day' and traditional Christmas carols.

Elsewhere, Cee-Lo Green is straight in at Number 10 with his album 'Lady Killer' and Ray Davies is just two places below with his collaboration LP 'See My Friends', according to the Official Charts Company.

Jay-Z also goes in at 20 with 'The Hits Collection: Vol 1'.

Kings Of Leon Go for a 3rd, Lupe's Big Debut

Even with all the competition this week sees another reign by rock band Kings Of Leon, who now have their longest running No. 1 song on the chart as Radioactive stays on top for a third consecutive week. Following close behind is Marina & The Diamonds who make it to their all-time peak of No. 2 yet again but this time with their single Shampain. That'll probably end B.o.B's chances of going to the top with the Rivers Cuomo collaboration, Magic, which goes down a notch to the No. 3 spot. But things get more interesting thanks to a huge debut by Lupe Fiasco as The Show Goes On enters directly at No. 8, giving him his 18th overall chart entry and his 7th top 10 song. It will most likely become his second chart-topper in the weeks to come.

Cheyl Cole Goes to No. 1 in the UK

It's still a battle of the Pop female hotties over in the UK as Cheryl Cole tops the Albums Chart and Rihanna does the same in the Singles Chart.

Cheryl Cole has gone straight to Number One in the UK albums chart tonight (November 7) with 'Messy Little Raindrops'.

It is the second time the Girls Aloud singer and X Factor judge has hit the top spot with a solo album after her debut LP '3 Words' went to Number One last year.

However, she was denied a UK chart double by Rihanna, whose latest track 'Only Girl (In The World)' replaced Cole's Promise at Number One in the singles chart.

Rihanna has now scored a Number One in each of the last four years after hitting the top spot with 'Umbrella' (2007), 'Take A Bow' (2008) and 'Run This Town' (2009), according to the Official Charts Company.

There were four new entries in the albums chart top 10, including Bon Jovi at Number 2 with 'Greatest Hits' and Rumer's 'Seasons Of My Soul' at Number 3.

In the singles chart, Alexis Jordan went in at Number 3 with 'Happiness, while The Saturdays featuring Flo Rida moved up to Number 10 with 'Higher'.
