TMJ Charts: Walk The Moon to the Top

It's turning out to be a varied start of the year as a fourth title is crowned at #1. It's also the return of the bands now that chart newbies WALK THE MOON climb that last step to the top with Tightrope, getting their first chart-topper after 10 weeks on the countdown, with the last six being inside the top 4. And things look good for this band as it scores a notable second chart entry this week with anywayican being the Highest Debut at #76.


The fall is not too steep for last week's #1. Scream & Shout by will.i.am and Britney Spears is down only to #2 this week. Chances of returning to the top are likely, I might add. The Lumineers score a new #3 peak with Ho Hey after 15 weeks on the chart and Swedish House Mafia fight a second round in the race for the top as Don't You Worry Child bounces back to #4. Mumford & Sons get their first Top 10 with I Will Wait jumping to #5, but Macklemore & Ryan Lewis get their second now that Thrift Shop finally breaks in and leaps to #8.

Phillip Phillips gets the Greatest Gainer title with Home making a big jump to #13, with the Biggest Jump belonging to Public Enemy's Harder Than You Think which is up 36 spots to #64. A few chart entries include the return of The Airborne Toxic Event (last charted in 2009) with Timeless at #77. Fabolous and Chris Brown debut at #78 with Ready, while Bat For Lashes scores her first entry with Lilies at #79. Last but not least is Asaf Avidan & The Mojos who come in with One Day / Reckoning Song (Wankelmut Rmx) at #82.

A notable mention goes out to Hawaiian Air by Friendly Fires which officially leaves the Songs chart as of this week. The song debuted at the #61 position on July 16, 2011 and became one of the biggest songs ever with 15 consecutive weeks (from September 9 to December 23) at #1, making it the second title with the most weeks at the top (tied with Mariah Carey's We Belong Together), and surpassed only by last year's Disparate Youth by Santigold which ranks first with 19 weeks at #1. In total, Hawaiian Air spent 81 uninterrupted weeks on the countdown. The feat makes it the third longest running title on the Songs chart after Florence + The Machine' Cosmic Love (86 weeks) and The Script's Before The Worst (97 weeks). It also ranked as the #2 song on the year-end charts of 2011. That being said, the oldest song currently charting is now Friendly Fires' Blue Cassette which is up to its 67th week on the chart so far.

The Recurrent Songs chart has Swedish House Mafia returning to the top with Miami 2 Ibiza, while Lana Del Rey's Born To Die spends its first anniversary on the Albums chart once again at #1.

TMJ Charts: A Late Welcome to 2013

Time to get back to business! First of all, I hope everyone got to have a good time during the holidays. It's kind of late to still be talking about that, I know, but since I disappeared for most of December I figured I'd start with that. Second, I'm trying to get the stats for my 'Best of 2012' countdowns, so that should be out shortly. It's also late for that, but whatever. It's coming.

Now onto our current charts! Little has changed at the top of the charts since the last commentary. No way, right? Macklemore & Ryan Lewis still dominate the Songs chart with Can't Hold Us featuring Ray Dalton. That's week number five at the top for them. But aha! It should be six if you were keeping track. Actually no, because Rudimental, John Newman and Alex Clare managed to sneak in to #1 for the last chart week of December with Not Giving In. They're now down to #6 for the current chart.

Lana Del Rey battles herself and now reaches a new peak of 4 with her track Blue Jeans, which is now the oldest song in the Top 10 with 42 weeks on the chart, while Ride sits at #5. And some fresh new music is coming along the way. Walk The Moon's Tightrope starts the new year with a #3 peak so far, Angel's Wonderful is stuck at #7 and Bruno Mars skyrockets to #9 with Gorilla. Speaking of fresh new music, new entries this week include Lana Del Rey's Blue Velvet at #81, the Lazy Rich Remix of Avicii's Silhouettes at #83, Kid Cudi's King Wizard at #93, and a triple-combo from Bruno Mars with Moonshine at #98, Money Make Her Smile at #99 and If I Knew at #100.

Also, will.i.am is finally on his way to scoring his first big hit on the chart, as a solo artist that is, with the catchy Britney Spears duet, Scream And Shout, being this week's everything at #19. The song is Power Play track of the week, the Greatest Gainer, and the Biggest Jump with a 26-spot leap in only its second week.

On the Recurrent Songs chart we have the should-have-been-#1-on-the-main-chart Chimes by Friendly Fires at the top for the second week in a row, while Lana Del Rey dominates on the Albums chart with Born To Die, currently in its 7th non-consecutive week at #1.

TMJ Charts: Gotye Stays at #1

This week brings us Gotye spending a second week at #1 with the song Eyes Wide Open, from his album Making Mirrors. With his previous hit Somebody That I Used To Know, he's the only artist this year to have scored two #1 songs on the Songs Chart, and he comes at second place as the artist with the most weeks at the top this year with 8, so far. Only Santigold has spent more at the top with record-breaking 19 weeks.

More on the Songs charts with Lana Del Rey scoring her fourth Top 10 hit so far with Radio jumping eight to #6. Her previous hits include Summertime Sadness (#5), Blue Jeans (#4), and Video Games (#2). Meanwhile, Santigold returns to the Top 5 with Disparate Youth and Gotye's second song in the Top 10, Giving Me A Chance, remains steady at #8. The week's Hot Shot and Highest Debut belongs to No Doubt whose Push And Shove featuring Busy Signal and Major Lazer starts at #30. There's only a couple more debuts this week with Kanye West, Big Sean and Jay-Z's Clique entering at #75, and Power Play track of the week, Don't You Worry Child by Swedish House Mafia featuring John Martin, entering at #97. The Highest Jump is Gotye's Save Me which leaps 44 spots this week to #45.

The Recurrent Songs chart has Friendly Fires spending a second week at the top with Jump In The Pool, while Making Mirrors by Gotye spends its 11th week at the top of the Albums chart.

TMJ Charts: Gotye Takes the Gold

The long-lasting #1 songs spell is broken this week as Gotye takes the lead with his song Eyes Wide Open, leaving Maroon 5's One More Night down at #2 after just one week on top. This is Gotye's second chart-topping song on the charts after Somebody That I Used To Know owned the #1 spot for 6 straight weeks earlier in the year, a song that is still going strong, currently at #4 after 43 weeks on the chart. This also helps Gotye at the Albums chart where he spends a 10th week at the top with Making Mirrors.

But that's not all because Gotye scores another Top 10 hit as well with Giving Me A Chance, which storms up to #8 as the Greatest Gainer song of the week. The Highest Debut goes to The Killers with Flesh And Bone starting up at #39, from their new album Battle Born. The Biggest Jump of the week is Let's Go by Calvin Harris featuring Ne-Yo with a move to #51.

The Recurrent Songs chart welcomes a new song on top as Friendly Fires' Jump In The Pool jumps 3 to #1.

TMJ Charts: Santigold Is Not Giving Up Yet

There's no stopping Santigold on the charts as she extends her record-breaking #1 run to 17 consecutive weeks with Disparate Youth. At this point I'm just trying to figure out what other song will be able to stay on top for so long, so what we're talking about here is basically hall-of-fame status. I should move along and try to compile a list of historic events that have left a mark in the charts. In the meantime, it's a good thing we still have new live performances to post from Santigold.

Disparate Youth (Live at Radio 1's Hackney Weekend)


Going back to this week's charts, there's a serious threat of a new #1, probably very soon. WZRD stays at #2 with a bullet with Love Hard, while, out of nowhere, electronic band M83 shoots for the stars as Midnight City raises from the ashes and scores Greatest Gainer honors with a move to #4, this is after lingering up and down the charts for 25 weeks. Friendly Fires is not giving up yet and stays at #3 once again with Chimes, and Lana Del Rey returns for a second round at the Top 10 with Blue Jeans moving to #9.

Strong re-entries for Jay-Z and Kanye West who score Power Play of the week with Niggas In Paris, and Birdy's Without A Word goes all the way to #33. The Biggest Jump of the week is another song that's not ready to lose steam yet: Gym Class Heroes and Neon Hitch scale back to the top half of the chart at #48 with Ass Back Home.

On the Recurrent Charts we see Kings Of Leon once again at the top with Notion for a total of 7 weeks at #1, while Santigold recovers her spot at the throne with Master Of My Make-Believe for a total of five non-consecutive weeks at #1.

TMJ Charts: Santigold Breaks #1 Record!

I saw it coming and it's happened. A 7-year-old record has finally been broken and we all have Santigold to turn our heads to. 16 weeks at the top gives Disparate Youth the honor of being the longest stay at the top for any song since I started this little chart back in late 2004. The record was previously held by Mariah Carey whose We Belong Together spent a total of 15 weeks at the top back in 2005. A few years later - six, to be exact - that record was almost broken when Friendly Fires tied at 15 weeks at the top with Hawaiian Air. That was in late 2011, but now the record goes back to one and one woman only. Cheers to that!

Now the thing is how long can she hold on to the top spot. Let's not forget that Disparate Youth had an incredible debut at #2, only to claim the #1 spot the week after. And the thing is that it's still ahead from its closest competitor by quite a decent amount of points. WZRD is getting ready though to claim their first chart-topper with either Love Hard (the week's Greatest Gainer) or Teleport 2 Me, Jamie which finds a new peak at #4. Alex Clare is also headlining the Top 10 with two tracks as Up All Night returns to #7 and Too Close goes single-digit for the first time at #9. And we say good-bye to Adele's Someone Like You as it leaves the Top 10 for the first time since December 23, 2011. The Biggest Jump and Power Play of the week goes to a well-deserved return to the charts to one favorite, Alanis Morissette, as Guardian jumps to #28. Her last chart appearance came in early 2009 when Not As We peaked at #63.

The Recurrent Chart sees Kings Of Leon returning to the #1 spot with Notion for a sixth week, while WZRD returns to the top of the albums chart with their self-titled record for a second week.

TMJ Charts: Santigold Ties Record at #1

In the blink of an eye, or actually, 15 weeks at #1 give Santigold something to talk about. Disparate Youth is now tied to Mariah Carey's We Belong Together (2005) and Friendly Fires' Hawaiian Air (late 2011) as the song with most weeks at the top of the Songs chart. The big news is that she could actually break the record as things have been slow for the past couple of weeks. So, stay tuned and check out the next chart to see if that actually happens.

TMJ Charts: #1 Double for Santigold

If you've followed the charts for the past weeks I'm sure you've noticed that the Santigold obsession is not going away any time soon. This time, in fact, she scores a #1 chart double as Disparate Youth spends its 11th consecutive week at the top of the Songs chart, while its parent album Master Of My Make-Believe reaches the summit of the Albums chart for the first time. I haven't got a chance to keep track of this feat unfortunately, but she's just one of the few to achieve this type of thing. I got some homework to do.

Elsewhere on the Songs chart the Top 3 stays the same with Gotye & Kimbra's Somebody That I Used To Know refusing to leave the #2 spot and Friendly Fires' Chimes trying to get higher at #3. Of course, Santigold's domination is worth another mention with her previous single Big Mouth getting a re-boost while earning Greatest Gainer honors and a new peak at #4. Her apparent new official single, Look At These Hoes follows the footsteps and sits at #12 in its third week. She also gets the Highest Debut of the week as Fame enters the chart at #47. And she's not alone on this chart conquest with Alex Clare making serious moves to the high end of the chart, claiming the #5 and #6 spots this week with Up All Night and Humming Bird, respectively. He also scores multiple debuts this week starting with Whispering (#65), When Doves Cry (#66), Treading Water (#84), I Won't Let You Down (#85), Tight Rope (#86) and I Love You (#87). He also scores the Highest Jump of the week as Too Close moves up 41 spots to #57. Marina & The Diamonds scores another debut with Primadonna at #64, as does M83 with New Map at #67. Keane returns to the charts thanks to the release of Strangeland and gets three new entries with In Your Own Time (#71), Sea Fog (#72) and Day Will Come (#74).

The Recurrent Songs chart has Amy Winehouse at #1 for a third consecutive week with He Can Only Hold Her from her album Back To Black.

TMJ Charts: Santigold Steady at #1

Like there's anything else to say. This past week was the release of one of the most anticipated albums on my list and that means, of course, that Disparate Youth had nothing else to do than stay at the top of the Songs chart. This marks the song's ninth consecutive week at #1, and obviously, Santigold's best charting song to-date. She's about to embark on a serious rampage here on the charts because she also scores four out of the seven new chart entries this week, starting with Look At These Hoes at #76, followed by Pirate In The Water at #93, The Keepers at #94 and God From The Machine at #96.

But the Highest Debut of the week belongs, yet again, to Alex Clare. I told you last week how I've been playing his album almost non-stop. After a few listens, that little gem titled Up All Night stands out, and is this week's Power Play making its debut at #30. But there's also Too Close entering at #97, a song that's making me give dubstep a more serious chance. The seventh song to debut this week is WZRD's High Off Life which enters at #92.

Gotye scores the week's biggest jump with I Feel Better moving up 52 spots to #38 while achieving a new peak after 15 weeks on the chart. The Greatest Gainer is Calvin Harris whose Feel So Close gets closer to the top as it jumps three to #5 this week.

The Recurrent Songs chart sees a new queen as the late Amy Winehouse dethrones Marina & The Diamonds with He Can Only Hold Her from her album Back To Black.

Speaking of albums, that chart gets some much needed action with Santigold's Master Of My Make-Believe debuting at #2, an almost clean and never-before-seen debut at #1 if it weren't for Friendly Fires' Pala which holds steady and scores an incredible 17th week at the top.

TMJ Charts: Santigold Wins the Race

So, who won the 8th week at the top race? Once again it's Santigold holding on to the #1 spot of the Songs chart with Disparate Youth, off her newest album release Master Of My Make-Believe. The song has now spent eight consecutive weeks at the top out of the nine its spent on the chart. Amazing, isn't it? That leaves Gotye and Kimbra waiting in line for a not-unlikely return to the top as Somebody That I Used To Know gets stuck at #2 for yet another week. Both songs see gains this week, but with Santigold as winner you get to enjoy my favorite Disparate Youth remix so far:

And again, watch out for Friendly Fires as they're coming in with full force and get Greatest Gainers honors again this week as Chimes jumps up five to #3. If it eventually reaches the top, it'll become their third #1 single off Pala.

A new addiction and a new addition to the charts is Alex Clare, whose The Lateness Of The Hour album has got me on a loop for this past week. And he's coming with a bang, reaching the Hot Shot and Highest Debut as Humming Bird enters directly at #22. Expect other songs from Alex Clare's album to enter the charts in the coming weeks.

Other chart entries this week include Jennifer Lopez and Pitbull's Dance Again debuting at #92; Drake, Lil Wayne and Tyga debut at #95 with a remix to The Motto; and another chart first for Birdy, making her debut at #96 with the song Without A Word. Lana Del Rey's Off To The Races is the Biggest Jump at #39 this week, while David Guetta, Taio Cruz and Ludacris resurface at #80 as Power Play of the week with Little Bad Girl. Good moves as well for Justin Bieber's Boyfriend (lol!) with a new peak at #36, while Gym Class Heroes and Neon Hitch rebound to #43 with Ass Back Home.

Marina & The Diamonds stays at the #1 spot of the Recurrent Songs charts with Obsessions, while Friendly Fires' Pala returns to the top of the Albums chart for a total of sixteen weeks at #1.

TMJ Charts: Santigold Still On Top

I guess I take it seriously when it comes to taking a "small break" because it's been too long since I last posted a chart commentary. Not that I was asked for a reason, but I just needed to come clean in case you were wondering. Anyway, I can't remember exactly what the last post was about but I'm guessing Santigold was topping the songs chart when that happened. And if you were expecting any type of changes there, well, it's not your lucky day. Seven weeks have gone by and she still rocks the top with her Disparate Youth. Wait, what? You have not listened to this amazing song yet? Well I suggest you do, like, right now:



And with Santigold not wanting to leave the throne any time soon, so do Gotye and Kimbra. Their chart, and now worldwide hit Somebody That I Used To Know, is back at #2. Let's remember that they also spent 7 weeks at the top before Santigold took over. So, who will get the eighth? A return to the top for Gotye would be quite a feat and a chart first. Santigold, Gotye. Gotye, Santigold. Is anybody else trying to push ahead of these two? Actually, there is. This past week I re-discovered some Friendly Fires songs (yes, again!) and Chimes gets the ticket! The song is Greatest Gainer and Jump with an incredible 77 spot move to #8 this week. Show Me Lights is another winner as Power Play of the week, rebounding all the way to #25 in its 18th week on the chart. Both songs score new chart peaks, by the way. If you can recall, Friendly Fires scored two #1 songs: the record-breaking Hawaiian Air, followed by Blue Cassette.

Other big movers include Calvin Harris with a song that past me by last year and is just starting to get the regular plays. Feel So Close is the title and jumps this week to #21. LMFAO and Natalia Kills get a second chance with Champagne Showers getting a new peak at #28, while Chris Brown and Benny Benassi rebound and place themselves at #30 with Beautiful People.

An oddly slow-paced chart this week for some other peeps. Adele is still hanging in there with two of the oldest charting songs in the Top 10: Set Fire To The Rain gets a new peak at #6 in its 35th week while Someone Like You loses momentum and falls to #7 in its 38th week. 21, on the other hand scores it's 15th week at the top of the Albums chart! KT Tunstall scores a new chart entry with The Punk as Highest Debut of the week while Drake and Rihanna round it up with Take Care making its entrance at #88.

And speaking of Marina & The Diamonds... Actually, in reference to all the videos posted for her new upcoming release, Electra Heart, she scores the #1 spot of the Recurrent Songs Chart with Obsessions.

6th Week for Gotye & Kimbra

Not a lot of change in the Songs chart as we find Gotye and Kimbra spending their sixth consecutive week at the top with Somebody That I Used To Know, and though it's too early to tell, you should know that it's already become the biggest song of the year so far.

Elsewhere in the top ten, only two songs reach a new peak and those would be Bon Iver's Towers, which makes a surprising move to #2 and Friendly Fires' Pala which moves up a notch to #9. The longest running title here is also the week's Greatest Gainer with Adele's Someone Like You returning to #3 in its 30th week on the chart. An impressive chart run, that doesn't necessarily mean a shot at #1 is out of the question. If we go back to 2009 Kings Of Leon's Closer managed to become the longest run to the top in the history if the Songs chart by reaching the summit in its 37th week on the chart.

The week's biggest chart jump goes to Lana Del Rey whose Blue Jeans leaps 34 spots to #27 with three weeks on the chart. She also gets the Power Play track of the week and her fifth chart entry with Off To The Races making an entrance at #59. But the Highest Debut goes to The Fray, a band that returns to the chart after a two year absence. Heartbeat, from their newly released album Scars & Stories, enters at #38. Their last chart entry came in 2010 with Syndicate peaking at #67.

Gotye Scores 5th Week at #1

It's week number five at the top of the Songs chart for the Gotye and Kimbra collaboration, Somebody That I Used To Know, and even though it's lost its bullet for the first time since it entered the chart eleven weeks ago, it still has potential to stay on top for several more as it's still ahead of Lana Del Rey, who settles for #2 once again with Video Games, by 200 points. Friendly Fires' former #1, Blue Cassette, rebounds to #3 in its seventeenth week on the chart.

More songs shake up the Top Ten this time starting with Bon Iver who score their first top 5 song as Towers moves up to #4 as Greatest Gainer track in its sixth week on the chart. Their biggest song so far had been Calgary which managed to peak at #24 by the end of last year. Another artist returning to the Top Ten is Santigold, who manages to get her new single Big Mouth to #6, which is also the peak of her previous chart entry Go! featuring Karen O. Santigold's biggest hit so far is 2008's I'm A Lady which peaked at #5. And Gym Class Heroes get their second Top Ten song from The Papercut Chronicles II with Ass Back Home featuring Neon Hitch moving to #7 this week. Their previous chart entry, Stereo Hearts featuring Adam Levine, peaked at #10 and sits currently at #32 in its 33rd week on the chart.

The chart's new entries this week includes more Gotye with Smoke And Mirrors getting the Highest Debut at #70, followed by Lana Del Rey's National Anthem at #84, Sean Paul's She Doesn't Mind at #85 and Vetiver's first chart entry with Can't You Tell at #98.

Gotye Holds On To #1

With only ten weeks on the chart Gotye's Somebody That I Used To Know featuring Kimbra is already shaping up to be one of this year's biggest tracks as it scores a fourth consecutive week at the top, and still with a bullet. And although the song ends its streak as Greatest Gainer, it still manages to reach a new maximum of +450 points for this chart issue. That's almost the same number of points by all titles below the #30 position combined! In other Gotye-related news, Making Mirrors makes the jump to #1 for the first time on this week's album chart knocking out Adele's 21 to the #2 position.

So, who gets Greatest Gainer honors this week? Well it's none other than Bon Iver's Towers which jumps 19 spots to the number 14 position in its fifth week on the chart. It's already their biggest song since Calgary and expect it go even higher because I'm really feeling this song a lot at the moment. As far as the Biggest Jumper of the week goes, leave it to Friendly Fires as their latest album's title track Pala moves up 25 to #22 this week. Madonna makes a return to the charts since 2009's Celebration and gets this week's Highest Debut with her newest single Give Me All Your Luvin' featuring Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. entering at #76. Lana Del Rey follows with her third chart entry so far, this time is Blue Jeans debuting at #77. Amy Winehouse enters at #88 with Between The Cheats and The Cars' Keep On Knocking closes as Power Play track of the week debuting at #100.

Gotye's Chart Domination

Last week I told about how Somebody That I Used To Know's lead on the Songs chart was so huge that it certainly guaranteed a lengthy stay at the top. Well, now the Gotye and Kimbra collaboration might even exceed my expectations as it scores it's third consecutive week of Greatest Gainer honors, and with the same amount of weeks at Number 1! As of this week the lead stands at +180 points over it's closest competitor.

And that competitor is obviously the #2 song on the chart, owned Flo Rida and his latest hit Good Feeling, which scores a new peak in its seventh week; as does Lana Del Rey closing the top three with Video Games. David Guetta and Michel Teló also get new peaks inside the top ten with the Sia-assisted Titanium at #6 and worldwide phenomenon Ai Se Eu Te Pego at #8, respectively. A prominent chart year for Sia is on the horizon as the Flo Rida collaboration for Wild Ones makes the Biggest Jump and stands at #26 in its third week. Friendly Fires rebound for more chart action as the title track from Pala is the Power Play song of the week, making a re-entry at #47. Meanwhile, Gotye scores his third chart entry so far with Eyes Wide Open as the Highest Debut at #81, followed by new songs from The Strokes (Metabolism - #87), The Kooks (Taking Pictures Of You - #88) and a chart first for St. Vincent who debuts at #96 with Cheerleader.

I didn't post a chart update last week so I should make up for it now. Not many chart newcomers have had the success that Gotye is most likely going to achieve with Somebody That I Used To Know. It had a rocky start, but last week it finally knocked Rihanna's We Found Love from the top spot with Greatest Gainer honors. Not surprisingly, and with eight weeks on the chart, the Gotye/Kimbra collaboration is once again Greatest Gainer track of the week, scoring now a massive lead. That means, +130 points more than the #2 song on the chart. So, unless something extraordinary happens or I stop hitting the replay button, expect it to stay on top for many more weeks to come.

Mas Friendly Fires... (+ Big Announcement!)

We may be ready to say goodbye to this year, but that doesn't mean there's a lot of change on the charts, or at least the top of the charts, that is. In the second to last chart issue of 2011, Friendly Fires still dominates both the Top Songs and Top Albums charts with Blue Cassette and Pala, respectively. Blue Cassette stays on top for a second week in a row, extending the group's consecutive stay at the top to 17 weeks while Pala, on the other hand, enjoys its fifteenth week at the top of the Albums chart.


Get more music by Friendly Fires

Some unexpected jumps include Fedde le Grand storming up to #3 as Greatest Gainer with So Much Love, while Benny Benassi and Gary Go return to #2 with Close To Me. Rihanna and Calvin Harris enter the Top Ten at #5 with We Found Love, Adele returns at #6 with Someone Like You and LMFAO recovers and closes at #10 with Party Rock Anthem. Lots of new entries this week including new songs by Pitbull, Taio Cruz, Avicii, Nickelback, Flo Rida, Lana Del Rey, Bruno Mars and... Justin Bieber!?

And with those names comes the big announcement! Starting this week, and with the help of the new digital charts I'm compiling, the worldwide top selling singles are incorporated to the formula for building my personal Songs chart. That basically means more mainstream songs in there than the ones I'd never - or would eventually - listen to. Creepy, I know, but the reason for this decision, after going back and forth for a while, is that with less available time in my hands I find myself listening to less music than what I'd actually like to. With that said, the chart gets a little more action while not completely affecting its outcome, after all, my tastes will still play a big part of each week's chart. Hopefully we won't get too much of Glee Cast, or the likes, in there lol. The merging of current and recurrent songs is also a big possibility in the near future, but I haven't made a decision about that... yet.

The Year of Pala

With last week's 15th consecutive run at the No. 1 position with Hawaiian Air, Friendly Fires tied the record for most weeks at the top of the Songs chart with one same title. Sadly, they're not able to break that record because it all ends this week as Hawaiian Air finally gives up the throne and falls to No. 4. But it's all not lost, because Friendly Fires replace themselves at the top with Blue Cassette, off their album Pala, after debuting at No. 100 eight weeks ago. So after all, Friendly Fires is the act with the most consecutive weeks - sixteen - at the top of the Songs chart, with one or more songs.

More crazy stats? And I say crazy because they all involve the number 7 somehow...

With such a long run at the top for Hawaiian Air, many titles had to settle with a not less respectable No. 2 position. A total of seven songs are included in this list starting most recently with Snow Patrol's This Isn't Everything You Are, which stays as runner-up for a second week. But there's also Benny Benassi's Close To Me featuring Gary Go (#3), Blink-182's Fighting The Gravity (#6), Young The Giant's My Body (#7), Coldplay's Paradise (#10), Foster The People's Pumped Up Kicks (#12) and Florence + The Machine's Shake It Out (#18).

Also, Blue Cassette becomes the seventh song that made its debut at the No. 100 position and eventually went on to the top of the Songs chart. This list includes Bone Thugs-N-Harmony (Wind Blow - 2007), Fergie (Clumsy - 2007), Mariah Carey (O.O.C. - 2008), Kanye West (Love Lockdown - 2009), Jay-Z (Real As It Gets - 2010) and Outasight (Everything - 2011).

But that's not all. Friendly Fires is also the seventh act to replace itself at the top of the Songs chart after Interpol (Wrecking Ball, Rest My Chemistry - 2007), Mariah Carey (twice)(Migrate, Side Effects, I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time, O.O.C. - 2008; Betcha Gon' Know (The Prologue), H.A.T.E.U. - 2009), The-Dream (My Love, Right Side Of My Brain - 2009), Akon (Sexy Bitch, Available (Benny Benassi Remix) - 2009), Jay-Z (Empire State Of Mind, Real As It Gets - 2010) and Lykke Li (I Follow Rivers (The Magician Remix), Love Out Of Lust - 2011).

'Hawaiian Air' Goes For 15 Weeks

Only one other song in the history of the chart has achieved what Hawaiian Air has just achieved, and that is stay at the top of the Songs tally for fifteen consecutive weeks! Friendly Fires now shares that mighty record with one renowned female singer better known as Mariah Carey, who first achieved the milestone a little more than six years ago with We Belong Together, also with a consecutive run. And while there's still the chance for records to be broken, there are plenty of other songs waiting to take over the chart and put an end to Friendly Fires' lead. One of the strongest titles is now Benny Benassi's Close To Me featuring Gary Go which storms up to #2 in its 23rd week on the chart, or Snow Patrol with This Isn't Everything You Are going up to #4 in its 3rd week, or White Lies with The Power & The Glory and Streetlights both battling it up inside the Top 10.
