TMJ Charts: Time to Scream... and Shout

It's good, once in a while, to take some time and indulge in some guilty pleasures. I admit this is not the best song out there at the moment, but I just can't seem to escape it. At the same time, both will.i.am and Britney Spears score their first chart-topper ever with this collaboration titled Scream And Shout. The song made steady gains since its debut four weeks ago and reaches the summit as the Greatest Gainer track of the week. It's the best chart position for will.i.am as a main artist after This Is Love, which has, so far, peaked at #36. As a featured artist he's reached #1 twice with Usher's OMG and Flo Rida's In The Ayer. For Britney, it's her best chart position after Till The World Ends, which managed to reach the #7 position. The pair's other collaboration, Big Fat Bass, reached #15 and charted for 29 weeks.


But will it just be a short-lived moment, like last week's #1 Steve McQueen by M83? Closing in on the action is Walk The Moon which is now up to #2 with Tightrope. The band has slowly and steady been climbing up the chart for the past 9 weeks. The Lumineers score a new chart high as well with Ho Hey jumping to #4, No Doubt's Looking Hot looks also good at #8 and The Wallflowers get their first Top 10 hit with Reboot The Mission.

Ra Ra Riot makes a big comeback to the charts with Beta Love scoring the Highest Debut at #76. The band had not seen any action since 2008/2009 when Too Too Too Fast became one of the top songs ever on the chart with a 66-week run and a #4 peak. Another return includes the band Muse which has not seen any song chart since 2010's Undisclosed Desires. The band gets a new debut with Madness at #93. The Cataracs score their first chart entry with Alcohol Remix at #97, and so does Tame Impala with the double take Feels Like We Only Go Backwards at #98 and Be Above It at #99. Public Enemy also sees its first chart entry now that Harder Than You Think debuts at #100.

The track with the Biggest Jump this week is Temper Trap's Never Again which leaps 43 spots to #50.

TMJ Charts: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Move to #1

This was really a no-brainer. Chart newcomers Macklemore & Ryan Lewis may have gotten a good start with the growing worldwide hit Thrift Shop four weeks ago, but when their track Can't Hold Us featuring Ray Dalton started off at lucky #7 a week later, the road to the top was paved and they're now crowned kings of the Songs chart for the first time, and with good chances of staying there for what's left of 2012. As for Thrift Shop, the song was just shy of breaking the Top 10, and jumps to #11 this time around.

A lot has been going on in the Top 10 as of late, and this week is no exception. M83 score the greatest gainer song with Steve McQueen moving up a notch to #2. A great follow-up to their former #1 song Midnight City, which by the way spends its 50th week on the chart at #4. Icona Pop is also closer to the top as Manners gains a new peak at #3, Lana Del Rey's Ride moves up two spots to #7 and Imagine Dragons finally jumps the border with It's Time moving up to #9.

This week brings another big debut as well. Rudimental score their second chart entry at #16 with Not Giving In featuring John Newman and Alex Clare. Their song Feel The Love, which also features John Newman on vocals, is up to #50 this week. There are four other debuts, all in the 90-100 range. First up is Aussie duo YesYou featuring Marcus Azon with their first chart entry, Frivolous Life, at #93. Chart veterans The Killers score their 60th entry on the Songs chart with Miss Atomic Bomb debuting at #97, also the third song from the Battle Born era to make the countdown. Lana Del Rey also scores another chart entry, this time with Gods & Monsters making its way to #99. She now has 7 active songs on the chart. And at the very end of the list sits Garbage with Control making its debut at #100.

WZRD scores the biggest jump and power play of the week with Teleport To Me, Jamie making a huge rebound to #45. Other big movers include AWOLNATION's Sail (#28), Willy Moon's Yeah Yeah (#32), Mumford & Sons' Babel (#39), The Script's Six Degrees Of Separation (#40), Lana Del Rey's American (#46), WALK THE MOON's Tightrope (#51), P!nk's Try (#55), The All-American Rejects' Heartbeat Slowing Down (#57), and Opus Orange's When I Look In Your Eyes featuring Chelsea Williams (#77).

The Recurrent Songs chart has The Naked And Famous' Young Blood locked at #1 for the 4th week in a row. On the Albums chart Hurry Up, We're Dreaming. by M83 scores its 7th non-consecutive week at the top.

TMJ Charts: Calvin Harris & Florence Welch at #1

Things keep looking good for Calvin Harris who sees his Florence Welch collaboration, Sweet Nothing, steady at #1 for a third consecutive week. The song is included in his newest album release 18 Months. It has become the sixth #1 song this year to spend 3 weeks or more at the top.

But with a few weeks left for 2012, another song is seriously making its way to the top and will, most likely, be the last chart-topper of the year. I'm talking about Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' Can't Hold Us featuring Ray Dalton, which after a strong debut at #7 last week, jumps all the way to #2 as Greatest Gainer. Steve McQueen by M83 scores a new peak at #3; and so does Placebo, whose B3 goes up two notches to #4. Lana Del Rey scores her fifth top ten hit with Ride jumping six spots to #9.

The Biggest Jump goes to Mumford & Sons' Babel which is up 35 spots to #55. Honorable mentions as well for Sky Ferreira who is up to #39 with Everything Is Embarrassing, Linkin Park's Lost In The Echo which is up 28 spots to #54, The Script & will.i.am are up 24 to #69, and Lana Del Rey's American is up to #46.

We have six new entries this week, the first three being chart newbies. First off is AWOLNATION's Sail which scores the highest debut at #56, followed by Walk The Moon's Tightrope at #77, and Tuka's Die A Happy Man featuring Jane Tyrrell at #82. The other three debuts are all by returning female artists. First is Ellie Goulding who we last saw in mid 2011 with Lights. She's back now with Figure 8 at #86. Christina Aguilera sees a second song from her Lotus album debut as Empty Words enters at #87. And last but not least, Kelly Clarkson returns to the chart with Catch My Breath at #97.

The Recurrent Songs chart has Young Blood by The Naked And Famous at #1 for a third consecutive week, while M83 reconquers the top spot of the Album charts with Hurry Up, We're Dreaming. for a total of 6 weeks at #1.

TMJ Charts: M83 Hangs for a 3rd Week

Things don't change at the top of the Songs chart with M83 scoring their third consecutive week as Greatest Gainer and at #1 with their song Midnight City. The song is now way ahead of its closest competitor, which is Gotye by the way, who once again manages to climb back to #2 with Somebody That I Used To Know.

The top 10 sees the return of Flo Rida's Wild Ones featuring Sia, which in its 27th week on the chart jumps 12-7. Coldplay and Rihanna reach a new peak at #4 with Princess Of China, and so does Linkin Park as Burn It Down reaches a new high at #5. The big news though is the multiple new entries we have this week. The Highest Debut belongs to Marina & The Diamonds with How To Be A Heartbreaker which opens at #23 while fun. score their second chart entry after We Are Young as Some Nights debuts at #34. And it's a return to the charts for Nas who enters at #35 with Daughters, while The Killers come back as well with their latest single Runaways which opensat #46. More new entries by The Weeknd with Initiation at #60 and Motion City Soundtrack with True Romance at #61.

The Recurrent charts sees Incubus regain the top spot with 2007's Dig while M83 keep the #1 spot on the Albums chart with Hurry Up, We're Dreaming. for a second week.

Another great week for M83 as it stays at the top spot of the Songs chart for a second week with Midnight City, and once again, as Greatest Gainer. The songs has now exceeded all expectations and has also helped the band get their first #1 on the Albums chart as Hurry Up, We're Dreaming. moves 2-1.

Santigold's big hit Disparate Youth stays at #2 while WZRD's Love Hard stays at #3. Lana Del Rey gets her first Top 5 hit with Blue Jeans getting a new peak at #5 in its 23rd week on the chart, while Linkin Park moves up to #7 with Burn It Down. Coldplay and Maroon 5 return to the Top 10 as Princess Of China jumps 8 to #9 and Payphone moves one to #10. Their most recent Top 10 hits were Paradise (#2) and Moves Like Jagger (#6), respectively.

And there's more from Maroon 5 as they also get the Power Play and Highest Debut of the week with One More Night at #34. Other debuts include a chart-first for Garbage whose Blood For Poppies debuts at #35, a chart-return for P!nk with her latest pop anthem Blow Me (One Last Kiss) coming in at #47 and another chart entry for Lana Del Rey with Summertime Sadness debuting at #48. More new entries from Simple Plan, Muse, Linkin Park, Katy Perry and Chris Brown at the lower end of the chart.

The Recurrent Songs chart sees a new #1 song as Chris Brown and Benny Benassi take over with the chart favorite Beautiful People.

TMJ Charts: M83 Dethrones Santigold

A record-breaking streak of 17 weeks at #1 for Santigold's Disparate Youth has finally come to and end as we now turn our heads to M83 whose Midnight City reigns as the new #1 on the Songs chart. And it comes as big feat, not only because it's the electronic band's first chart-topper but it's a song that has been all over the chart since its debut. It first appeared in early November of last year where it bowed at #74 only to climb to #66 four weeks later before experiencing a brief absence starting early December. By February of this year the song re-enters at #97 and goes up to #42 by late March, before hovering around the lower parts of the chart once again. But it wasn't until early May that the song picks up a steady pace and finally breaks the Top 40. And steady ever since, it's now reached the top as Greatest Gainer in its 27th week on the chart. I can only remember one song that's taken longer to reach the summit and it's Kings Of Leon's Closer which back in 2009 conquered the top in its 37th week.

In other chart news, it's a good week for Flo Rida who sees Wild Ones featuring Sia pick up once again and is the week's Power Play at #18. There's also two debuts from his new album: I Cry is the week's Highest Debut at #29 followed by Run featuring RedFoo at #42. Howler's Black Lagoon is the week's other debut entering at #87. The week's Biggest Jump is Benny Benassi's Close To Me featuring Gary Go, a song that refuses to leave the chart and goes up 45 places to #55.

And a couple of names are also news. First off, Alanis Morissette gets her best chart peak so far as her newest single, Guardian, stands at #7 this week. Her best effort had been Incomplete which went as high as #9 in 2008. Another return to the top belongs to Linkin Park with Burn It Down standing at #10. This is their best chart position since Waiting For The End reached #6 in October of 2010.

TMJ Charts: Santigold Is Not Giving Up Yet

There's no stopping Santigold on the charts as she extends her record-breaking #1 run to 17 consecutive weeks with Disparate Youth. At this point I'm just trying to figure out what other song will be able to stay on top for so long, so what we're talking about here is basically hall-of-fame status. I should move along and try to compile a list of historic events that have left a mark in the charts. In the meantime, it's a good thing we still have new live performances to post from Santigold.

Going back to this week's charts, there's a serious threat of a new #1, probably very soon. WZRD stays at #2 with a bullet with Love Hard, while, out of nowhere, electronic band M83 shoots for the stars as Midnight City raises from the ashes and scores Greatest Gainer honors with a move to #4, this is after lingering up and down the charts for 25 weeks. Friendly Fires is not giving up yet and stays at #3 once again with Chimes, and Lana Del Rey returns for a second round at the Top 10 with Blue Jeans moving to #9.

Strong re-entries for Jay-Z and Kanye West who score Power Play of the week with Niggas In Paris, and Birdy's Without A Word goes all the way to #33. The Biggest Jump of the week is another song that's not ready to lose steam yet: Gym Class Heroes and Neon Hitch scale back to the top half of the chart at #48 with Ass Back Home.

On the Recurrent Charts we see Kings Of Leon once again at the top with Notion for a total of 7 weeks at #1, while Santigold recovers her spot at the throne with Master Of My Make-Believe for a total of five non-consecutive weeks at #1.

TMJ Charts: #1 Double for Santigold

If you've followed the charts for the past weeks I'm sure you've noticed that the Santigold obsession is not going away any time soon. This time, in fact, she scores a #1 chart double as Disparate Youth spends its 11th consecutive week at the top of the Songs chart, while its parent album Master Of My Make-Believe reaches the summit of the Albums chart for the first time. I haven't got a chance to keep track of this feat unfortunately, but she's just one of the few to achieve this type of thing. I got some homework to do.

Elsewhere on the Songs chart the Top 3 stays the same with Gotye & Kimbra's Somebody That I Used To Know refusing to leave the #2 spot and Friendly Fires' Chimes trying to get higher at #3. Of course, Santigold's domination is worth another mention with her previous single Big Mouth getting a re-boost while earning Greatest Gainer honors and a new peak at #4. Her apparent new official single, Look At These Hoes follows the footsteps and sits at #12 in its third week. She also gets the Highest Debut of the week as Fame enters the chart at #47. And she's not alone on this chart conquest with Alex Clare making serious moves to the high end of the chart, claiming the #5 and #6 spots this week with Up All Night and Humming Bird, respectively. He also scores multiple debuts this week starting with Whispering (#65), When Doves Cry (#66), Treading Water (#84), I Won't Let You Down (#85), Tight Rope (#86) and I Love You (#87). He also scores the Highest Jump of the week as Too Close moves up 41 spots to #57. Marina & The Diamonds scores another debut with Primadonna at #64, as does M83 with New Map at #67. Keane returns to the charts thanks to the release of Strangeland and gets three new entries with In Your Own Time (#71), Sea Fog (#72) and Day Will Come (#74).

The Recurrent Songs chart has Amy Winehouse at #1 for a third consecutive week with He Can Only Hold Her from her album Back To Black.

Hawaiian Air: It's Not Over Yet

Only three other songs have managed to stay on top of the Songs Chart for ten straight weeks or more since I started building the countdown, but now Friendly Fires gets the honor to be the first band to achieve the milestone. It was hard to tell in the beginning if Hawaiian Air had the strength to go as far as spending this many weeks on the chart but it's now proven to be one of the strongest titles in years. And it just goes on, now that this week the song gets the highest point-rank of its chart run. Maybe going for the 15-week record? It doesn't seem impossible at this point, but let's just hope we don't run out of high quality Youtube clips!
