The Weekly TMJ Charts - March 1, 2014

It looks like Vance Joy will not be leaving the top of the charts any time soon as he collects a 4th week at #1 with Riptide. But nothing's written in stone as there's close competition with Left Alone by Flume and Chet Faker returning to its #2 peak after charting for 18 weeks and Cardiac Arrest by Bad Suns being the Greatest Gainer track of week with a jump from #19 to #7. Foster The People also enters the race to the top with Coming Of Age moving up 4 to #8.

The week's highlight in the Songs Chart is also the Highest New entry. Young The Giant makes a strong debut at #14 with Anagram, personally, the best song off their recent release Mind Over Matter. A second album track from the band, Firelight, also enters the chart at #84. Other debuts include Bridges by Broods at #82, Home By Now by Bombay Bicycle Club at #98, Blue Moon by Beck at #99, and Can You Do This by Aloe Blacc at #100.

The Highest Jump of the week belongs to London Grammar whose track Strong moves up 27 spots to #47, while the Power Play track of the week goes to Instant Crush by Daft Punk featuring Julian Casablancas, re-entering to a new peak at #58.

The Weekly TMJ Charts - February 22, 2014

Another week rolls by and it sees Vance Joy keep the top spot of the Songs chart for a third consecutive round with Riptide. Honestly, this is the kind of song that gets a 'meh!' on a first listen but then gets stuck in your head after the third or fourth. It's also really surprising because it's a style of music that I don't normally listen to, but for some reason it's there, and all that I can do is just hit the replay button time and time again. Just a feel good song I guess..

And what's with all the Aussies taking over the whole chart?! This week's Greatest Gainer is This Song Is Not About A Girl by Flume and Chet Faker, both of whom also take over the top spot of the Albums charts with the amazing collaborative Lockjaw EP. The song gains 75 chart points and makes a jump to #2. They also bounce back one spot to #3 with Left Alone after 17 weeks.

Good moves this week for chart newbies DARKSIDE with Paper Trails and Phantogram with Fall In Love who make their way to the top 10 at #6 and #8, respectively, after only 5 weeks. Foster The People's new single Coming Of Age starts warming up on the ears and jumps 20 to #12 - their third highest chart peak so far after Pumped Up Kicks (#2) and Call It What You Want (#11) from 2011. Bad Suns, which has become a guilty pleasure with their Cardiac Arrest, makes a big jump to #19 this week. But the biggest Jump belongs to Wild Cub with Thunder Clatter moving up 29 spots to #47.

Foster The People - Coming Of Age

Mr. Probz, another artist making its way into the chart for the first time, gets the Highest New Entry with the Robin Schulz Remix to Waves debuting at #34. Chart royalty Mariah Carey makes has a couple of debuts with her new single You're Mine (Eternal) (#96) and it's remix with Trey Songz (#49) - marking her 97th and 98th main chart entries so far! More new songs include Beck's Waking Light (#69), Cherub's Doses & Mimosas (#78), Magic Man's Paris (#80), MØ's Don't Wanna Dance (#81), The National's I Need My Girl (#91), U2's Invisible (#92), N.A.S.A. & Aynzli Jones' Hide (Tropkillaz Remix) (#93), Sam Smith's acoustic version of Disclosure's Latch (#94), and Diplo's Revolution (RUN DMT Remix) (#95).

Rihanna Returns To #1

It was a very close race for the #1 spot this week, perhaps the closest so far in the history of these charts, but after a one-week absence from the top due to LMFAO's Sexy And I Know It taking the title last week, Rihanna bounces back with We Found Love featuring Calvin Harris for a second non-consecutive week at #1. Close behind though are two of LMFAO's hits, the aforementioned Sexy And I Know It, which falls back a spot to #2 and Party Rock Anthem featuring Lauren Bennett and GoonRock which stays at its #3 peak.

Elsewhere in the Top Ten we find Adele who's yet to break the #4 debut and peak of her song Someone Like You, up from last week's #5 position, Gotye and Kimbra are slowly but steady aiming at the pole position with Somebody That I Used To Know at #5 in its sixth week on the chart, Maroon 5's Moves Like Jagger refuses to go as it jumps five spots to a new #6 peak after 29 weeks on the chart, Flo Rida gets Greatest Gainer honors with the Etta James assisted Good Feeling breaking into the Top Ten at #7, David Guetta and Usher's Without You also gets a spot at #8, Foster The People remains steady at #9 with Pumped Up Kicks, and the only dropper of the group, Fedde le Grand's So Much Love is down six spots to #10.

The Hot Shot Debut of the week belongs to fun. with We Are Young featuring Janelle Monáe entering at #52. A promising figure for this year's charts is Lana Del Rey who sees her song Born To Die debut as Power Play of the week at #71. Video Games on the other hand sits solidly at #29 in its fourth week. And plenty of other new entries this week coming from Selena Gomez & The Scene, Rihanna, One Direction, Lady GaGa, Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, Young Man and Bon Iver.

DJ Earworm › World Go Boom (United State Of Pop 2011 Mash-Up)

I had completely forgotten about this, which is not a good look since these are about the only mash-ups I listen to, ever. Once again DJ Earworm brings us the top Billboard hits of the year all rolled into one big production, both sonically and visually. World Go Boom is the title for this year's mash-up.

LMFAO Gets To The Top

Lots of action as we start the new year with last week's first chart-topper for Rihanna, We Found Love featuring Calvin Harris, moving down a spot to #2 while LMFAO seize the chance and jump five and all the way to the top with Sexy And I Know It to claim the first #1 of 2012. The song, which jumps with Greatest Gainer honors, is also the first chart-topper for the electro-pop duo who in spite of charting six other songs in the past have only had major success with this title and Party Rock Anthem, the latter seeing a post-holiday resurgence this week as it reaches a new peak (#3) after 24 weeks on the chart.

A couple of acts new to the chart get their first Top Ten hits starting with Gotye's Somebody That I Used To Know featuring Kimbra jumping to #6 in its fifth week on the chart while Afrojack and Steve Aoki's collaborative track, No Beef featuring Miss Palmer, jumps seventeen spots to #8 this week. Foster The People's Pumped Up Kicks and Coldplay's Paradise round up the Top Ten. The week's Highest Debut and Power Play track belongs to Drake and The Weeknd's Crew Love landing at #40. The Year of Pala

With last week's 15th consecutive run at the No. 1 position with Hawaiian Air, Friendly Fires tied the record for most weeks at the top of the Songs chart with one same title. Sadly, they're not able to break that record because it all ends this week as Hawaiian Air finally gives up the throne and falls to No. 4. But it's all not lost, because Friendly Fires replace themselves at the top with Blue Cassette, off their album Pala, after debuting at No. 100 eight weeks ago. So after all, Friendly Fires is the act with the most consecutive weeks - sixteen - at the top of the Songs chart, with one or more songs.

More crazy stats? And I say crazy because they all involve the number 7 somehow...

With such a long run at the top for Hawaiian Air, many titles had to settle with a not less respectable No. 2 position. A total of seven songs are included in this list starting most recently with Snow Patrol's This Isn't Everything You Are, which stays as runner-up for a second week. But there's also Benny Benassi's Close To Me featuring Gary Go (#3), Blink-182's Fighting The Gravity (#6), Young The Giant's My Body (#7), Coldplay's Paradise (#10), Foster The People's Pumped Up Kicks (#12) and Florence + The Machine's Shake It Out (#18).

Also, Blue Cassette becomes the seventh song that made its debut at the No. 100 position and eventually went on to the top of the Songs chart. This list includes Bone Thugs-N-Harmony (Wind Blow - 2007), Fergie (Clumsy - 2007), Mariah Carey (O.O.C. - 2008), Kanye West (Love Lockdown - 2009), Jay-Z (Real As It Gets - 2010) and Outasight (Everything - 2011).

But that's not all. Friendly Fires is also the seventh act to replace itself at the top of the Songs chart after Interpol (Wrecking Ball, Rest My Chemistry - 2007), Mariah Carey (twice)(Migrate, Side Effects, I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time, O.O.C. - 2008; Betcha Gon' Know (The Prologue), H.A.T.E.U. - 2009), The-Dream (My Love, Right Side Of My Brain - 2009), Akon (Sexy Bitch, Available (Benny Benassi Remix) - 2009), Jay-Z (Empire State Of Mind, Real As It Gets - 2010) and Lykke Li (I Follow Rivers (The Magician Remix), Love Out Of Lust - 2011).

No Match For Friendly Fires

Another week comes, a few things don't change. That is Friendly Fires still ruling the Top Songs and Top Albums charts. Moving closer to the record, Hawaiian Air stands now at 11 consecutive weeks at the #1 position while, once again, besting the point rank of its chart run. Three closest competitors have come and gone and a fourth one comes with Coldplay's Paradise moving up five to #2. There's still no giving up with Florence + The Machine's Shake It Out, Foster The People's Pumped Up Kicks and Young The Giant's My Body rounding up the top five.

On the other charts, Pala enjoys a 9th week on the top of the Albums Chart while Domestic Scene by The Radio Dept. also spends its 11th week on the top of the Recurrent Songs Chart. A new #1 song mixes it up on the Shared Top 50 Songs chart as Britney Spears jumps 16 spots to lead with her latest single Criminal.

Hawaiian Air: It's Not Over Yet

Only three other songs have managed to stay on top of the Songs Chart for ten straight weeks or more since I started building the countdown, but now Friendly Fires gets the honor to be the first band to achieve the milestone. It was hard to tell in the beginning if Hawaiian Air had the strength to go as far as spending this many weeks on the chart but it's now proven to be one of the strongest titles in years. And it just goes on, now that this week the song gets the highest point-rank of its chart run. Maybe going for the 15-week record? It doesn't seem impossible at this point, but let's just hope we don't run out of high quality Youtube clips!

Friendly Fires Still Rules The Charts

Nine weeks have passed since the band Friendly Fires claimed the #1 spot of the Top Songs chart with Hawaiian Air, and with no signs of slowing down and a respectable lead, they still have the chance to go for ten or even more. And with only nine more weeks left to end the year, it's almost certain that the song will get crowned as the year's longest running number one song. That is, at least a tie if by chance there's a new #1 next week that matches Hawaiian Air's stay at the top.

Chart Fact: Hawaiian Air joins a short but elite list of 9'ers, starting with Ne-Yo's So Sick from 2006, Gym Class Heroes' Viva La White Girl from 2007 and Mariah Carey's Obsessed from 2009. Only three more songs have had stays at the top in the double digits. This one could be next.
