The Chart retuns and Katy Perry still leads

Now that the break's over it's time to get back to business. And it's not like things have changed much, actually. At least not for Katy Perry and her Teenage Dream, which stays strong at #1 for a fourth week. This would've been her seventh week at the top if I had published all the September charts, but that didn't happen. Still not a bad lead for a female on what's been a male dominated year. The last female singer to top the chart was Ke$ha with the song Tik Tok which started a 3-week dominance at the end of January.

The question is who gets the next #1 as Usher lands strong inside the top 10 with Hot Tottie (#4) with Jay-Z, which is both the Greatest Gainer and Power Play of the week. Kanye West gets a new peak with Power (#2) and Florence + The Machine don't give up after 46 weeks on the chart with Cosmic Love (#5). As for the biggest jump, La Vida Bohème makes a leap of 76 spots with the song Flamingo (#24).

The other big news this week has got to be the return of one of my favorite bands ever: Interpol. Even if learning about Carlos Dengler's departure only extended the disappointment of waiting 3 whole years for a new album, this self-titled release delivers. This week Lights catapults back to the top 3, Barricade gets a new peak and the other eight tracks make their debut inside the top 50 with the album's closer The Undoing marking the highest debut at #11. The sure thing is, there will be a lot of this great band for weeks to come.

The gap between chart issues has resulted in a lot of other new songs debuting as well. Starting with Jason Derülo who lands directly at #6 with Ridin' Solo. OneRepublic also debut with All The Right Moves (#41), a song that has been out for almost a year but it's only now that's getting my attention. Another favorite band, Kings Of Leon, debuts with the first single Radioactive (#42) from their upcoming new album Come Around Sundown. Bruno Mars also debuts with his first solo single Just The Way You Are (#50) while Flo Rida returns with the help of David Guetta on Club Can't Handle Me (#51). There's also new songs from The Temper Trap, Lovedrug, Train and The Killers in the lower half of the chart. Of course, so many debuts have forced several songs to fall but that doesn't mean they can't recover in the future.
